TASK1 : EXPLORATION

1.  This is the Module information Booklet for this

module(GCD60804):

Principles_MIB_Feb 2024_Approved (1).pdf

2. These are the design principles that are taught in this module.

1.  Gestalt theory

This theory is based on principles that explain how humans perceive and organize visual elements into meaningful patterns and aim to show how complex scenes can be reduced to more simple shapes and perceive the shapes as a single , united form.

2. Contrast

Contrast is the juxtaposition of very different elements, without which the visual experience is monotonous and can provide visual interest, emphasize key points and convey content.

3. Emphasis

Emphasis theory is the process of making certain elements stand out more than others in a design. It helps to direct the viewer's eye, create focus, and convey the most important message.

4. Balance

Balance theory refers to the distribution of visual weight within a design. It involves arranging elements so that no single part of the composition overpowers or dominates the others, creating a sense of stability and cohesion.

5. Repetition

Repetition refers to the use of consistent visual elements such as shapes, colors, patterns, or styles throughout a design. These repeating elements help create a sense of cohesion and reinforce the overall message or theme.

6. Movement

The movement theory refers to the visual flow or process of directing the viewer's eye from one element to another in a composition. It creates a sense of dynamism, rhythm and narrative.

7. Harmony & Unity

Harmony refers to the arrangement and combination of elements to create a visually pleasing composition where all parts complement each other. Unity is the result of achieving harmony, in which case the design gives a sense of cohesion and wholeness.

8. Symbol

Symbols theory are visual representations that stand for or stand in for something else, often with deeper cultural, emotional, or conceptual significance.

9. Word and image

This theory is the relationship between textual content and visual elements in a composition emphasizes how they work together to convey meaning and communicate effectively. Where text refers to written content, such as headings, body text and captions, images include photographs, illustrations, icons and other visual elements.

3. Selected UNSDG Goal

The UNSDG Goal that I have selected is goal  No.5 (gender equality) . This goal is Gender equality is a fundamental aspect of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This goal aims to eliminate discrimination, violence and harmful behaviours against women and girls and ensure equal opportunities in leadership, education and economic participation. Specific goals include eliminating discrimination and violence, ensuring equal access to education and health care, promoting women's participation in decision-making processes, and ensuring equal opportunities for women in employment and entrepreneurship. Gender equality is recognized as an important component of achieving sustainable development and is interlinked with issues such as poverty, health, education and economic growth. The United Nations emphasizes the importance of addressing gender disparities in order to create a more inclusive and equitable world.

4. Selected Design

Below is a poster I had chosen for this task.

Meaning: Since the beginning of time, women have been burdened with a variety of tasks, such as child rearing, housework, and other stereotypical and fixed influences on women in society. However, in the current society, men have access to more social resources in the fields of politics, economy, law, religion, education, military, and so on. In the common cultural ideology of the society, women are always placed in a secondary position. For example, the image of a "doctor" is usually male, while the image of a nurse or a waitress is mostly female. So we must address gender disparities to create a more inclusive and equitable world.

5. Explanation for selecting the work of art /design

This work uses the language of design to demonstrate that male symbols point to female symbols. It shows that all the indicators of the demands of the society point to women, and that women are expected to be perfect in everything.

The design principles expressed in the artwork:

1. Contrast: In this poster, designer used blue and pink to create a sharp visual contrast: pink and blue are used to represent stereotypes about women's and men's choices of colors respectively.

2. Gestalt: For gestalt theory in this poster, designer used fragmented, similar, and varying sizes of male symbols moving in different directions to form a complete female symbol in the center to create a visually cohesive and meaningful design.

3.Symmetrical Balance: Designer used the principle of symmetry and balance to form a symmetrical female symbol graphic with a male symbol forming the center axis and dividing the female symbol. The male symbol is also divided and evenly distributed on both sides to create a sense of formality, stability and order.

4. Emphasis: For emphasis theory, designer used a bold blue font to emphasize the female and a thin pink font to indicate the male since emphasize the female.

5. Repetition: designer used the theory of repetition to duplicate the male symbol to create a sense of cohesion to form a female symbol and reinforce the theme of the poster: female.

6. Harmony: designer used harmony theory to arranges the male symbols in an orderly manner so that there is no unnecessary white space in the image, while the remaining white space naturally forms a female graphic symbol. Creating a visually interesting composition and giving a sense of cohesion and wholeness.
