Lecture

💡Week 1💡

  • At the beginning of the class Mr Fauzi introduced the class to the module and informed that all submisiion need to be done in google classroom and not MyTIMES
  • Also showed some of the past works in this module: http://fauziyusoff.com/dpi?authuser=0
  • Why we need to learn photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is a user-friendly software program and also supplies great deals of one- of -a kind tolls that assist you to release your imagination.
  • Why photoshop is important for a Graphic Designer
    • express your creativity
    • create graphic design
    • restore old images
    • integrate graphics with text artistically
    • make use of brushes
    • change photo color
    • rectify mistakes in photographs
  • I have also learnt the concept of digital imaging and tips of how to be a successful graphic designer
💡Week 2💡
Introduction to composition
1) Focal point
It helps viewer' eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of the design first.

2) Scale& Hierarchy
It helps to draw attention toward and away from certain elements.

3) Balance the element
A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it.

Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly coloured elements.

4)White space
It helps to boost the design's clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of the composition.

Golden ratio
The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are
aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
figure  1. 4  Golden ratio

figure  1. 5  Golden ratio in the nature

In a design, golden ratio can give harmony and proportion. Golden Ratio is to set your dimensions to 1:1.618
figure  1. 6  Design using golden ratio

Composition(Framing and Cropping)

Framing is important to establish a relationship between the characters, the environment, and the atmosphere.
  • Single
  • Two shot
  • Three shot, four shot, crowd shot
  • Over the shoulder (OTS)
  • Point of view (POV)
  • Insert shot
💡Week 3💡
In this week, Mr. Fauzi introduced us some tools in Photoshop.
1) Lasso Tool
2) Pen Tool

This is a video of pen tool tutorial:

Layer
Layers are images that are stacked one on top of the other. Each layer can be used without affecting the other to make changes. Together, they make up the final image. The great thing about layers is that they can be saved as a single Photoshop file. This means that you can use them for editing purposes that are not destructive.

Tutorial
Mr fytullah gave us some introduction about different size of document.
  • A4 usually use in commonweal countries.
  • A4 can be enlarged into A1 and A0
  • D4 size is used in United State
💡Week 4💡

Adjustment Layers
These are some modifier for adjustment layers:

1. Brightness/Contrast:

2. Level

3.Curves

4. Exposure

5. Selective Colour

Filter
Filter is used to change colour and blur or add completely new image effects.

💡Week 5💡

Exposure

Exposure is the amount of light which reaches the camera sensor or film.

figure  1. 7  Different exposure of photo

Exposure Setting

Camera setting that affects the luminous exposure:
* Shutter speed; The speed at which the camera shutter is closed that allow the light to reach the film.
figure  1. 8  Different shutter speed

* ISO: Camera 's sensitivity to light. The lower the number of ISO

Focal Length

The shorter the focal length , the wider the angle of view and vice -versa. Focal length is the measurement form the optical center of a camera lens to the camera's sensor.

figure  1. 9  Focal length
Depth of Field

The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus. The smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field.

figure  1. 10  Depth of field

Tutorial
Mr Fytullah gave us some tutorial in using
Color balance (Command +B)
Hue /Saturation adjustment (Command + U)
Levels(command + L)

💡Week 6💡

The principle of design  are the rules to create effective and attractive compositon. These are some fundamental principles of design:
Emphasis
Balance
Alignment
Contrast
Repetition
Proportion
Movement
White space

Tutorial
The lecturer introduced the blending mode and told us try to apply the rule of thirds, golden ratio and symmetrical composition in the digital collage.

Practial
Week 3
  • Create e-portfolio blog
  • Use Printerest and pick the top interesting design
  • Mr.fauzi also informed that we need to start to collect unwanted magazines to prepare for next class
Three designs I choose

figure  1. 1 by pinterest

1. The tomato image is visualized in a flat art style that expresses the content in a straightforward manner and the typography makes the whole design look harmonious and balanced. As well as the use of artistic fonts to express the category of vegetables.

2. This design utilizes figure and ground well. The image is dominant and there's small text towards the bottom, which is where the viewer's eye is drawn with the progression from a black mass with eyes to legs on the ground.

3.
In this design, gradient geometric shapes are used to re-form the Chinese characters for visual impact, and earthy yellows and lime greens are used to express the ancient theme.

Reflection
  • For the first week I leant some theory of adobe photoshop and how to be a successful graphic designer.
  • Enjoyed to find some different kinds of designs and writing my opinion on these design that realized have many art style on graphic design.
Hearst Mansion

In this week, we need to do a digital imaging exercise, which is matching the character Shazam into a hearst mansion.

There are a few technics need to include in this practice:
-Quick selection tool
-Layer mask
-Filters
-colour correction

Quick selection tool and layer mask are used to substrate background character.

figure  1. 4  Shazam
figure  1. 5  Shazam after masking out

I attempt to blend the character into the backdrop after resizing it. The colour may be adjusted using the Curves Adjustment layer, Match Colour, and Colour Balance layers. I used the Gaussian Blur filter to give some shadow, and I then applied a noise filter to the character.

Because of the yellow light on the left, I gave the figure a Soft Light layer.

To further darken the reflection on the bottom, I duplicated the picture, reduced its opacity, and added a multiply layer. The reflection's saturation was reduced. In order to simulate water reflection, ripper filter was implemented.

And then we were instructed to match out own picture into the hearst mansion. But I choose my friend's photo to edit.
After applying the same step here is my outcome:

Recolour Image

This week's assignment is to recolour a monochrome picture. In this activity, you will utilise the Quick Selection Tool, Marquee Tool, Brush Tool, Refine Edge Brush Tool, and Layer Mask. The two most often utilised Blending Modes are Softlight and Overlay.

These are the provided black and white images.

PROJECT I: COLLAGE (PHYSICAL & DIGITAL)

1. Physical Collage

For Mr Fauzi class, we need to choose and identify our collage's design elements to be cut out and compose them together . Use this way to understand composition better.

PROGESS

  • I start by browsing through the magazines and then cut out the elements that I feel comfortable with.
  • In addition, I consciously categorized the cut-outs by size: large, medium and small, so that it would be easier to balance the design!
  • After a lot of work and feedback, my final result is as follows

PRE-COMPOSITION 1

Fig. 1.1 Composition #1, Week 2 (4/5/2024)

The first composition I came up with was in a rectangular frame. I wanted the collage to be dominated by three little people. I made sure that the colors and elements were evenly distributed so that there was enough contrast, otherwise certain parts would blend together. I'm not happy with this composition, I would have liked more focus. It also looks a bit cluttered to me. So for the next composition I decided to identify a subject and remove some elements.

PRE-COMPOSITION 2

Fig. 1.2 Composition #2, Week 2 (4/5/2024)

In my second attempt, I simplified the elements to focus on a more centralized composition. I still kept in mind to evenly distribute the different colors to create equal visual weight. Place the three person as the subject. Personally, the composition was much better this time than the first.

PRE-COMPOSITION 3

Fig. 1.3 Composition #3, Week 2 (4/5/2024)

The last piece I came up with was my final choice. In this composition, I completely abandoned my previous idea and tried a completely different form. This time, I placed the main figure (the man in green) in the center and placed the various elements around him. I think the composition has a good balance, it is symmetrical to a certain extent, and in addition, this arrangement appeals to me more than the previous works. I find it more harmonious.

2. Digital Collage
For this task. we need to use Lasso tools and magic wand tools to crop out the image. And then we can use different type of layers and blending mode to create the different composition.
Fig. 2.1 Composition #1, Week 3 (16/5/2024)

Fig. 2.2 Composition #2, Week 3 (16/5/2024)

Fig. 2.3 Composition #3, Week 3 (16/5/2024)

In the week 4 we needed to apply adjustment layers in our best composition digital collage. So There is my final digital college after edited.

                                              Fig. 2.4 Final Composition #3, Week 3 (17/5/2024)

This portion taught me how to make a digital collage the right way, including how to utilise layers, the magic wand tool, and the pen tool. I also developed a better comprehension of layer layout. Additionally, I discovered that Photoshop's blending mode layer allows me to smoothly combine many images. And when applyed the adjustment I gained knowledge on how to apply filters and adjustment layers. These tools greatly improve my design's visual appeal. The adjustment layers' ease of use is impressive, especially how flexible they are in terms of modifying the effects' density.

REFLECTION
  • To be honest, I was confused at the beginning because I felt that the magazines and information I had collected were not what I wanted and were not relevant enough to make a good design.
  • After that I had a lot of fun with the composition and came up with different collage concepts using the images provided. In addition, I learned how to use limited resources to come up with creative ideas.
