PROJECT 01– BOX MAKING (20%)
Timeframe: Week 05 – Week 07 (Deadline Week 07)

Creating Personalized Boxes for Non-Boxed Items: The goal of this task is to hone your abilities in designing unique packaging options for goods that aren't packaged in conventional boxes.  You should be able to show that you can create useful, imaginative, and eye-catching boxes that improve the presentation and packaging of non-boxed goods at the end of this project.

Task Description
Item Selection: Choose two non-boxed items from your daily surroundings. The size of the item is between 15cm to 20cm. These items should not come in traditional box packaging but should be relatively small in size (e.g., a mug, a book, a pair of sunglasses, a candle, etc.).

Justification: Provide a brief justification for your selection of these items, explaining why custom box packaging would enhance their presentation and functionality.

Box Design
Box Structure: Create detailed diagrams or sketches of the box structure for each item, including dimensions, flap designs, and closure mechanisms. Ensure that the proposed box is functional and secure.

Prototype: Create physical prototypes of the custom boxes for both selected items. You can use cardboard or other suitable materials to bring your designs to life.

Project 01-Box Making
Week 04 – Non-box Item Preparation & Sketching

Mr. Shamsul gave us instructions in the preceding weeks to collect two non-box things for the module's first assignment.  I prepared the following items:

Item 1: Notebook

Item 2: Kitty Tumbler

Sketches

We were told to make some sketches of the initial package designs we would want to develop for the selected goods once Mr. Shamsul gave his permission.  Here is my sketch:

1. Sketches for notebook
For notebook, I proposed 4 different types of box designs.

Fig 2.6 Sketch for notebook, week 04

1) Beer holder box design
The first design is a packaging design like the beer carrier box that got holder can take by hand. In the font part can put one tumbler, in the back can put one tumbler.

2) Cigarette holder case design
The second design is a packaging design like the cigarette holder case but is perfect to the notebook, is creative and useful at the same time.

3)Auto connected box design
The third design is design the paper and cut like the sketch and then they can auto-connected not need the glue anymore.

4)Torn open box design
The final design is a packaging design to the there is a dotted line in the theid of the carton that can be torn open .

2. Sketches for Kitty Tumbler
For Tumbler, I proposed 4 different types of box designs.

Fig 2.7  Sketch for Tumbler, week 04

1)Milk bottle Packaging
The first design is a milk carton design with a long handle and a hollowed out circle inside for carrying.

2)Design like Juice box
The second design is like a juice pouch, which is designed to be used as a direct drinking water source.

3)Window packaging
The third design is designed to have a skeletonized part called a window, so that you can clearly see what kind of inside.

4)Clip Design
The final design is the clip design can open directly that no need the glue.

Week 05 – Prototyping

In week 5, Mr Shamsul looked through the sketches we had prepared from the previous week and discussed which idea would be great for proceeding with prototyping for project 1. He suggested that idea 3 and idea 3 look good respectively for Tumbler and notebook .

He also taught us how to use Adobe Illustrator to create die-cutting lines during class hours:

Fig 2.8  Die cutting lines tutorial by Mr Shamsul, Week 05

Here are some of the important notes from the tutorial on creating die-cutting lines:
  • Use mm measurements for the laser cut diagram on Adobe Illustrator.
  • No fill colour needed for the diagram.
  • Line Point size: 0.5pt (must keep this size)
  • Avoid the laser cutting machine to think there are two lines, use direct selection to delete one side of the line and make sure there's only one line left on the diagram.
  • Use the align panel to align the objects
  • Use another colour on the scoring line.
  • Dont forget the glue part
  • Do NOT group your objects
  • Save your file to > export as >DXF file > version 2018
  • Bring your file on a thumb drive (USB)
Week 06– Prototyping

I made tangible prototype versions of the package designs I had selected in week five.

1. Chosen packaging idea:

2. Die-line layout designs:

1)Prototype for notebook

2) Prototype for Tumbler

3. Consultation & Feedback

Fig 2.12 Prototype for tumbler, Week 06

After making prototypes, I realized that a lot of the dimensions in my tumbler die- line were wrong, the width of the most prominent part should be 14cm, while the length should be 12cm.

Fig 2.13 Prototype for notebook, Week 06

For the notebook prototypes, I found that a lot of the dimensions in my die-line are wrong, some of the leftmost part is redundant, and the length of the most protruding part is 18.5cm and the width is 9cm.

Week 07 – Prototyping & Laser Cutting
1. Laser Cutting

We learned how to operate the laser cutting equipment from Mr. Shamsul in week seven.  He demonstrated for us how to use the laser and adjust its power and speed settings.

Fig 3.1 First trying for laser cutting , Week 07

I tried laser cutting for the first time. Unfortunately, I still had a bit of a problem with my dieline, in that the part that protruded still wasn't long enough, as well as the part that needed to be recessed was too wide and needed to be measured again. However, it was a great experience for me, not only to familiarize myself with the machine, but also to discover some areas for improvement.

2. Making Adjustments

Fig 3.4 Die-line adjustment before , Week 07

Fig 3.5 Die-line adjustment after , Week 07

On the first attempt, I found that the inner flaps should become narrower so that the outer flaps can be tucked in accurately. And the outer flaps should be wider, which is why the fold felt too tight on the first attempt. As a result, I made several adjustments to the dieline layout.

Week 08- Laser cutting & Final Outcome

1. Finalized Dieline
Below are my finalized die-line layouts for my packaging designs.

FEEDBACK

Week 04
  • I added the notepad as an additional item when Mr. Shamsul reminded me that I was meant to gather two, not just one.
  • Additionally, he suggested that we start the project by drafting a number of package design concepts for the selected products.
Week 05
  • I can move forward with ideas 3 for the notebook and tumbler, Mr. Shamsul said.
  • He suggested that I can experiment with different locking mechanisms for prototyping.
