PROJECT 02– INNOVATIVE PACKAGING (20%)
Timeframe: Week 05 – Week 07 (Deadline Week 07)
The School of Business and the Design School are working together
on this project. The package design for the product that the
TBS and SLAS students have produced is required.
In this project, TBS and TDS work together to create a
commercially viable solution for "PawCast" that includes a
business model, financials, package design, consumer profiling,
media presence, and marketing strategy.
The project's goal is to inspire students to apply their creative
and critical thinking abilities to produce visually appealing and
efficiently conveying packaging that reflects the brand's
message.
PROJECT 2– INNOVATIVE PACKAGING
Week 1– Group Formation
Mr. Shamsul briefly briefed us on project 2 in week 1, which
involves The Design School (we) working together with students from
The Business School. Following the seminar, some TBS students
presented a product concept to us. Additionally, Mr. Shamsul
gave us the freedom to select our own product group.
I made the decision to work with Pawcast. In our group have me
(jia yi) , amber , steph and cherly.
Week 2– First Meeting
The final project is in collaboration with the business school, as
our group project will focus on social media marketing, which serves
as an intermediary for selling cat-related products online to
consumers. The business school team we are assisting is Pawcast,
whose primary objective in developing their business plan is to
rescue stray cats. Below is their briefing slide:

After reviewing their briefing slides and engaging in extensive
discussions with them, our group intends to transform the shipping
box into a cat shelter box, allowing it to be repurposed as a
refuge for the cats. I must admit I was somewhat perplexed by
their business plan, as it was rather unclear what their
intentions were. Nevertheless, the packaging design remains
closely tied to the theme of cats, as it provides a place for them
to stay by utilizing the shipping box. Below are the references
for constructing the shelter box.
Fig 1.2 Cat box reference, Week 2
Fig 1.3 Cat box reference, Week 2
My group members and I spoke about how to construct the shelter
box since we all intended to provide a more appealing visual
appeal. However, we must first determine the shelter box's
dimensions before creating it. The business school provided
a little incorrect size, which makes it illogical to create the
shelter box for the cat.
Box : L : 345mm, W : 245mm, H : 95mm
Water Bowl : L : 85mm. W : 80mm
Food Bowl : L : 85mm. W : 80mm
Pack of Cat Food : L : 85mm. W : 50mm
Cat Toys : W : 35mm, H : 45mm
So I and amber remeasured it again, by using the right size of the
products and also considered the cat size by using my own cat to
measure by using the estimation to make the packaging size
right.
Fig 1.4 Pet food size Recommendation, Week 2
Fig 1.5 The size of cat bowl, Week 2
If purchase more than 2 items, exceeding 1 Kg, the estimated
height for the cat food (8cm) plus the cat bowl (5cm) will surpass
95mm. Additionally, the plan for the cat shelter requires a height
of over 350mm; therefore, the box height should be approximately
380mm to allow some space for the cat to stretch its body.
Furthermore, the estimated length of the cat food is 300mm, and I
would like to allocate 50mm for the holder base, which includes
25mm for both the right and left sides. Amber also intend to
include her own cat food or snacks as a promotional item, which
will add 120mm, resulting in a total length of 470mm. The width of
the cat food package is projected to be 220mm, similar to that of
the cat snacks. However, considering the cat's size, it may
require a length of 500mm to have enough space to lie comfortably
inside the shelter box. Consequently, the holder base will be
280mm, with each the front and back measuring 140mm.
So the total size for the cat shelter box will be: 470mm*
500mm*370mm. I and amber have drawn out the dieline that is
basically according to the box size, as can be seen below:

Naturally, there are the baseline holders designed to effectively
protect the products within the shipping box.
In terms of packaging design, consumers have the option to purchase
more than three items from the stalls. Additionally, they can
receive complimentary cat tools intended to delight them as a token
of appreciation. This arrangement is convenient for consumers to
utilize the tools. The box will serve as the shipping container,
constructed from thick and sturdy material to ensure the tools are
well-protected. Once the packaging box has been used, consumers can
follow the designated line, which consists of a black stroke filled
with white, to cut out an opening for the cat to enter or breathe.
The brown component is designed for cats to scratch their nails
on.
Below is our summary of progress updates from week 5:
Fig 1.7 Summary of Task 2 Week 4
For the packaging design, the consumers could buy exceed 3 items from the stalls and also could have the free cat tools that they wanna to surprise to the consumers as a thankyou gift, which is convenience for them to fill up the tools. The box will be the shipping box which is thick and more rigid as to protect the tools easily. After the usage of the packaging box, the consumers could follow the line which is the black stroke fill with white to cut the hole out for the cat to enter or breath. The brown thing is to let the cat to scratch their nails on it.
Here is the final Packaging design look like:
