Reflection

Experience

I have gained a great deal of new typographic knowledge and skills during the past 14 weeks. I admit that at first I didn't think typography was all that difficult, but after studying the fundamentals, I have a greater appreciation for it. This was one of the more difficult modules, in my opinion, but it was still quite easy and taught me a lot of new things, like how to use Adobe InDesign and FontLab. Overall, this module was a lot of fun for me, and even though it needed a lot of discipline and hard work, I'm glad I completed it. I am also appreciative to Mr. Hsin and Mr. Vinod for their continuous helpful criticism, which helps us polish our work and advance.

Observations

Throughout this module, I became more aware of how crucial details are to design. I believe that a minor alteration in typeface can have a significant impact on readability, visual appeal, and aesthetics because details are frequently disregarded and missed. Additionally, I've seen that typography as a whole considers readability, coherence, legibility, and general harmony in addition to beauty. Since beginning this module, I have also gained knowledge about the design concepts and works of others. I've seen a lot of really good and intriguing design work.

Findings

One of the most important things I've learned in the last 14 weeks is that typography serves a purpose beyond mere creativity and aesthetics—rather, it aids the reader in comprehending the text's meaning and content. After doing the module's assignments, I've discovered that creating minimalist designs—such as those for font design, type expression, and formatting—can occasionally be challenging. This may appear straightforward and uncomplicated, but the finished product is readable and timeless—a crucial quality in typography, in my opinion. Complexity is not always an indication of "better" work; occasionally, a rare and superior design notion that is both visually beautiful and ageless is simplicity.
